Water on the Central Coast

Most of the Central Coast is on mains water supplied by Central Coast Council, drawn primarily from Mangrove Creek and Mooney Mooney dams with the Hunter pipeline supplementing during drought. The water meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and is chlorinated for disinfection.

The most common local complaints are chlorine taste and occasional sediment after upstream maintenance. A standard carbon under-sink filter handles both for the kitchen drinking tap; whole-house systems handle them for every outlet.

Properties on rural blocks (and there are many on the Central Coast) often draw drinking water from rainwater tanks. Tank water needs a different treatment train — sediment removal, carbon for taste, and UV sterilisation for pathogens. NSW Health recommends this multi-barrier approach for any non-mains supply used for drinking.
