Water in Gosford

Gosford mains water is supplied by Central Coast Council. The primary source is Mangrove Creek Dam in the hinterland, supplemented from Mardi Dam and the Hunter Water interconnect during dry years. The water is treated and chlorinated to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

For most Gosford households the only complaint about the tap water is the chlorine taste. A two-stage under-sink filter (sediment + carbon) removes it for the kitchen drinking tap. A whole-house system removes it before it reaches every tap, the shower, and the washing machine.

Older homes — sediment and discolouration

Several established Gosford suburbs — East Gosford, Point Frederick, parts of North Gosford and Wyoming — have older houses with aging galvanised internal plumbing. The mains water arrives clean, but the pipework downstream of the meter can shed iron and sediment, especially after upstream maintenance or a water-main flush.

If you see occasional brown water at the tap, the answer is a sediment pre-filter — a 5 micron polypropylene cartridge ahead of the carbon stage catches the rust and grit before it reaches the kitchen. A whole-house Big Blue with sediment + carbon handles it for the whole property.

Rural properties west of the M1

Kariong, Somersby, and the rural blocks heading toward the Old Pacific Highway often draw drinking water from rainwater tanks. Tank water needs a different setup — sediment, carbon, and UV sterilisation — to bring it up to NSW Health's recommended standard for non-mains drinking water.
