Water on the coastal strip

Mains water is supplied by Central Coast Council. The source water comes from Mangrove Creek Dam in the hinterland, treated and chlorinated to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, and delivered at standard mains pressure. Chloramine is not used on the Central Coast.

The water arriving at a Terrigal or Kincumber tap is the same supply that reaches every other Central Coast suburb. The only difference is the run of pipework. The most common complaint is the chlorine taste — and a basic carbon under-sink filter or whole-house system removes it.

Beachside considerations

The water in your pipes is not saltier because you live near the beach. Brisbane Water is estuarine, the Pacific is ocean, and neither feeds the mains supply. What the coast does affect is the hardware outside your house:

  • Outdoor taps and hose connections corrode faster on beachside blocks. Specify marine-grade brass or 316 stainless steel.
  • Outdoor shower heads are worth upgrading to 316 stainless — chrome plates pit and flake within a couple of summers.
  • Pool top-up and irrigation lines that run through filter housings should use UV-stable PEX or copper, not standard polyethylene.

The internal filter housings themselves sit inside the house and are not affected by salt aerosol.

Recommended setups

  • Standard family home, mains water: two-stage sediment + carbon under-sink for the kitchen drinking tap. About $200 for the system, six to twelve months between cartridge changes.
  • Beachside premium home: three-stage 20" Big Blue whole-house system. Filters every outlet, including the shower — useful after a beach session when you want chlorine off the skin in addition to the salt.
  • Holiday rental: keep it simple. Single-stage carbon under-sink. Cleaners can change cartridges between bookings in five minutes.

I'm right on the beach — does the salt air affect my plumbing?

Not the water itself, but yes for outside fittings and shower hardware. Coastal aerosol corrodes chrome and lower-grade stainless steel. For beachside homes we recommend marine-grade or 316 stainless on outdoor taps and shower heads. The internal filter system sits inside, so corrosion is not an issue for the cartridges or housings themselves.

Does the beachside location mean my water is harder or saltier?

No. Brisbane Water and the Pacific are estuarine and ocean — neither feeds the town water supply. The mains water in Terrigal, Wamberal, Avoca, Copacabana, and Kincumber is the same Central Coast supply as Gosford or Wyong, just delivered through a longer run of pipework.

I rent out my Terrigal place as a holiday let — what is the simplest filter to maintain?

A single-stage under-sink carbon filter is the lowest-maintenance option. Cartridges last six to twelve months in light residential use; rental cleaners can change them in five minutes with the included spanner. For higher-throughput rentals or larger properties, a twin under-sink system stretches cartridge life. We do not recommend reverse osmosis for unattended holiday rentals — too much maintenance for a unit that may sit unused between bookings.
